hiya boys and gals, i drive a mk 4 3dr in black and thought tinted windows would look really nice so i have just found a place in northampton to get windows tinted, so had a word and they quoted me 160 for all 5 windows which i thought was quite god so booked it in, but dont know what tint to have i originally thought limo on back and light smoke on the front, but after tlkin to the bloke at a1 glass and he sais best to have same shade all round, and the 20% tint looks quite dark so what do you guys think?

thanks for any replies in advance

I went for sp15 (one lighter than limo black) at the back and sp20 at the front:

my mrs went for sp15 front and back, I'll try find pics of that. Also look for Dannysport18's car, he went for sp25 front and back.

IMO your asking to get pulled over with anything darker than 50% on your front windows. Even 50% is illegal though

up until tuesday i worked for a mobile electronics company that also did window tints. and as of the 1st april 2005 tints darker than 75% (mk4 astras r tinted to 75% from factory) are illigal on the windows of the front doors. we would get at least 1 car per week for removal of these tints as the result of being pulled by the fuss. also any company that now does these tints can be prossecuted. different police forces deal with this how they like. in west yorkshire they seem to take great pride in pulling people for this.

I would say get
50% VLT front sides
35% VLT rear sides
20% VLT rear window

At least then plod can see you're being a bit sensible by having front lighter than back. And the jump from 50 to 35 on the sides isnt as noticeable as having 50 then limo black - that wouldn't look great imo. The good thing about getting slightly darker on the rear half of the car means that less light gets into the car, so the interior is darker - so helps make the front sides look darker than they are.

On a dark winter night how dark is a 35% tint at the rear? Can you see out it?

I've got 20% on my rear window, and when it's dark and there's a bit of condensation on the inside of the window you can't see jack out of the back. But I use my wingmirrors more than my rear view mirror anyway. Just some reversing manourvers are a little more diffcult than they would've been, but to be honest I think that me not being able to see out the back has more to do with condensation than tints. Tints dont exactly help though..

Bear in mind if u put tint film on ya windows it takes longer for them to wind up and down so if u have the total closure u might have to alter the variable resistor to make sure they go up before the timer runs out.
