My cousin bought a Vectra 2.5 V6 after he smashed his Evo and he has been thinkign about gettin a VR6 Golf probably round a N-P plate for a few years since he's been in hospital we've decided to try and get him one!

Anyone know the Specs of the VR6 compared to the V6 Vectra???

the golf has about 10bhp more than a v6 veccy iic (not sure about the torque). I loved my VR6 and would buy another tomorrow, mine hadnt been looked after that well, my mate who i got it from didnt care and after 12 years and 103k miles it still didnt miss a beat - very solid cars. The vectra ive just got rid off (1.8 tho) was falling to bits at 27k.

In short ive not driven a V6 vectra but from my personal experience i would take a golf everytime!

Sounds Good to me Sten... I know how strong the Golfs are and the VR6 is a pretty damn good car... just wondered what they were like compared to the V6 Veccy...

Anyone got any specs...

If you do get him a VR6 and the mileageis nearing 90k+ (like 99% of them are these days) make sure the timing chains have been done, or at least budget an £800 extra to get them done.

Its an expensive job as the chains are on the gearbox side which has to be taken out to do them, but the fact that they have chains rather than a belt mean that they are damn strong for it.

I always did like the VR6 and would prefer one over the vectra any day

The Vectra SRi 170 isn't really that quick. Marginally slower than a 2.2 Astra.

A Vectra GSi (not 2.6) would be on-par with a VR6.

Money is no problem to my cousin he changes his car more often than his underwear....

One car we were lookign at had recipts for the Timing Chains at 76K it's only done 88K possibly worth buying it!

Craig Seeings as your from glasgow... whats first choice garage on Sheildhall road like?? it's not far from ibrox... ( no Gers Jokes mate... )

...in that case a few more horses than the Golf but they should be very evenly matched in a straight line. Id probably still take the golf but the vectra GSi is a nice car (just the reliability that would concern me).

Ah i know the company now.. the Golf i saw with the timing chain receipts and 88k mileage was theirs!!

Only thing i was Very unsure of was the engine it was whining... there was no grumble you'd expect from the Exhaust note it was just a pure constant whine... is this how all VR6's sound or is this one on it's way out it was also about £4k.....

oh and it had twin 2" round Exhaust looked like a Janspeed box so expected a bit more than just a whine  ...

the VR6 should purr like a kitten, mine had a std exhaust.

thought so... if anyone can get hold of a Video Clip or Sound Clip of a VR6 Exhaust note that would be much appreciated wanna know what i'm listening to really...

i wish i had taken some of mine, it was completely standard and is about the best sounding engine ive heard (apart from my new smart car  )

Number of valves 34
a typo i think 34 valves would be 5.667 valves per cylinder:lol:

just one more question on the VR6 i thought they were 4wd?? or was that just the Mk4 version??

Skipz
06-12-2004, 15:14
Most are Front Wheel drive havent come across a 4wd.. annd i've only Seen Mk3's not mk4's

Didnt they do away with the VR6 in 1998 when the brought out the MK4 and the VR6 was eventually replaced with the R32???

CraigY
06-12-2004, 15:18
yep mk3 only and all FWD

the mk4 version was called a V6 4motion and was a 4WD

A5TRA 59ORT

dont know why i thought they were 4WD:roll:

knowing me i probably saw one with a 4wd conversion and asumed they all were:lol:

and i thought that the V6 4motion was a just the newer version of the old MK3 VR6 is it not:?:

which is again why i thought they were 4WD

anyway i am just showing myself up now so i will shut up:oops:

Sten

yeah all the mk3s are FWD

The mk4 v6 4motion isnt that good, plenty of power but the 4wd and weight of it slow it down and the handling isnt very good.

Not completely true.;) VW did release a 4WD mk3 Golf, called the VR6 Syncro. Not released in this country though so are as rare as rocking horse poo and are LHD. They also come with the 2.9 engine the Corrado has and if you see on in England run away, cos most of the ones I've seen are Supercharged by there owners to get away from the extra weight problem :D

And if anyone is interested in a Mod'd VR6 roar, at flat chat down the start/finish straight at Donny from a de-catted system, with two silencers on a 2.5 inch system and K&N cone Filter (but standard other than that)check out these vids. Its in a MK2 golf, but you'll get the idea. I did only get 9MPG all day though :D

lol, yep, well I should do..its my job lol...talking of which Ishould have left for 30 mins ago...oops.

oh and one last thing.....

Yeah, defo a typo...Mk3 Golfs (and corrado's) are 12v and the Mk4 Engines are 24v and 2.8litres untill the R32, which is basically a 24v V6 from the Mk4 but has a larger bore, and different crank to allow a longer stroke to get 3.2 Litres and 240ish bhp from them.
