Default Problems with a 1.4 fiesta

The mrs has a 1.4 fiesta balck thats 3 years and 2 days grrrrr old. When the car gets down to 1/4 full of fuel the engine manegment light comes on. When you open the fuel filler cap loads of air rushes in. But after a drive the the problem persists. But fill the car up with petrol the light clears and all is well Ford want 65 quid just to find the fault. What could it be?
